Sat, 27 January 2007 Episode 10 (Eat Yogurt with Chopsticks) looks at one of my favorite Zen 2 Wow'isms, idea #136...Do something radical. Eat yogurt with chopsticks, blindfolded. This idea is designed to encourage YOU to try new things, be adventuresome, get out of the proverbial box. I have found that getting out of my comfort zone and trying new and different things can help me become more effective, build better relationships, and become more motivated. Perhaps the same will hold true for you. In the podcast I share a few ideas that have helped me in one way or another. They include: 1) Try Google Desktop to improve efficiency 2) Comment on Blogs and Podcasts to improve name recognition 3) Tell people about your goals (I'd like to sit on a board of advisors for a privately held company) Other ideas I did not get to include: 1) Write personal thank you notes to build stronger relationship 2) Learn to say "no" to non-revenue generating, or non-value producing activities (your time is too valuable) I encourage you to share ideas that fit the mold of Do something radical. Eat yogurt with chopsticks, blindfolded. E-mail me with ideas at Rob@Zen2Wow.com. Or, post a comment on the podcast website. Here are a 3 of the ideas I share in podcast: 1) On job hunting: first call people who have the authority to hire you. 2) Rehearse your elevator speech on any idea you are promoting Twenty seconds...GO 3) Business is what you do, not who you are What other Zen 2 Wow ideas do you have for those in job transition? Thu, 23 November 2006 Episode 7 (Set Goals in November) looks at Zen to Wow Idea #158 -- Set New Year's resolutions in November to ease the pressure. I specifically address the following 5 ideas to consider as you set goals for 2007 and beyond. 1. Make Goals S.M.A.R.T. 2. Set Personal and Professional Goals 3. Create Short and Long-Term Goals 4. Use Goals to Set Priorities 5. Understand the Action Steps Needed to Achieve Your Goals But, there is more to goal setting. So, with this in mind...here are 5 additional thoughts that should help your turn your goals into realities. Post and /or Share Your Goals: Goals can be very personal. As such, we have a tendency to hide them in our heads or the bottom of a file cabinet. Watch your goals really come to life the minute you put them up on the bathroom mirror or share them with your associates. By openly sharing your goals, they are no longer abstract wishes, but rather concrete things that are very achievable. Celebrate Your Victories: Accomplishing a goal, no matter how minor or trivial it may seem, marks a true level of achievement. Acknowledge your success and use it to gain momentum as you reach for the next goal. Understand and Learn From the Goals You Did Not Reach: Much can be uncovered by missing a goal. Maybe you set the bar too high, or underestimated how long it would take you to reach your objective. Perhaps you found a flaw in an assumption you made while setting your goals. Whatever the case may be, missing a target can be a meaningful opportunity if you take the time to reflect as to what can go right in the future. Update Your Goals: Goals can and should change over time. Economic conditions, competitive threats, and new business opportunities could all impact how you view your goals in both the short and long-term. Actively look at your goals each quarter and reevaluate where you want to head. Get Accountability: Goals are important and should not be treated lightly. If you are serious about success, enlist the help of a trusted advisor or coach to hold you accountable for your actions and push you to achieve your goals. You will be glad you did. Do you have other ideas / strategies about goal setting? Would you like to share your goals with me and / or other listeners? Post a message below, or send me an e-mail at Rob@EngelmanManagement.com. Fri, 3 November 2006 Episode 6 (Names vs. Smiles) analyzes Zen 2 Wow Ideas #81 -- People forget names never smiles. This podcast is about effective communication -- particularly written communication. "Names" is a metaphor for "substance" while "Smiles" is a metaphor for "style." While the substance of our message is critically important, often time style gets overlooked. This podcast shares ideas to consider before and during the writing process in order to ensure you are communicating for success. A few ideas include: * Know your audience * Consider the medium * Keep paragraphs short * Test it I look forward to hearing your thoughts and other ideas about effective communication. Sat, 7 October 2006 Episode 4 (Meaningful Revolutions) investigates Zen 2 Wow idea # 225 -- Your revolution doesn't have to be really big -- just meaningful. The term "revolution" is really a metaphor for Marketing Plans. While I do believe that marketing plans are critical for the success of one's business, they do not have to be big, elaborate, time consuming to create, or expensive to implement. This episode reviews several elements of a marketing plan including: 1) Goals 2) Target Audience 3) Product or Service Definition 4) Tactical Ideas 5) Time Lines and Action Steps 6) Accountability Here are a links to other articles I have written that talk about marketing plans: http://www.pertinent.com/articles/marketing/engelmanM1.asp http://www.tannedfeet.com/mkt_10mktg_plan.htm http://www.engelmanmanagement.com/article7.asp Another format I like is the SUREFIRE format to marketing plans: Set SMART goals for the short and long-term Uncover the needs of your target market Reflect on the ways you solve client's problems / pains. Establish clear, concise messages Formulate lists of activities to get your message out Institute detailed action plans on a daily, weekly, monthly Request accountability Enjoy stepping up and taking a BIG SWING Let me know what you think. - Rob Comments[0] |
Fri, 22 September 2006 Episode 3 (Bringing in the Experts) looks at Zen 2 Wow idea #213...Better to pay an expert plumber than pay an expert carpet cleaner too. The notion behind this idea is that we don't do everything well. Inherently we know this, but we don't always listen to ourselves. Typically, when we try to take on projects or assignments by ourselves, without the proper knowledge and/or technical skills, we could be setting ourselves up for failure. I share a story about getting this podcast off the ground, as well as a "ah ha" moment I learned from on of my clients. Mon, 4 September 2006 Episode 2 (Point of View) is the 1st Zen 2 Wow podcast that embodies the true spirit of what these podcasts are all about -- exploring an idea from That Was Zen, This Is Wow and applying it to an everyday situation. Point of View looks at how others view us. I talk about a banker who spends time talking about "dead presidents" vs. why a prospect should consider his bank. Plus, I toss out the idea of becoming a business doctor... Finally...ask questions, lots of questions (listen to find out more) If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at rob@engelmanmanagement.com.
